What SW Portland homeowners should know about ice dams and clogged gutters
Portland got a real freeze last week. A few SW Portland homeowners called about ice in the gutters. Here is what was actually going on.

SW Portland does not get Minnesota winters. But every few years we get a cold snap cold enough to freeze standing water in a gutter trough — and that is when the phone rings.
Last week we had three calls from Arlington Heights and Hillsdale homeowners who saw ice along the gutter line and worried about ice dams. Two of the three had the same underlying problem: gutters that had not been cleaned since the previous fall.
Ice dams in Portland are rare — gutter ice is not
A true ice dam needs sustained sub-freezing temps, a warm attic melting snow on the roof, and refreeze at the eave. Portland rarely stacks all three.
What we do get:
- Frozen debris plugs at downspout outlets where water pools before draining
- Icicles hanging from clogged gutters that overflow during a daytime thaw
- Ice in the trough where fir needles and maple leaves hold water against a north-facing run
None of that is an ice dam in the Midwest sense. All of it points to a drainage problem you can fix before the next freeze.
What to check after a cold snap
Walk your SW Portland house from the ground — no ladder needed in ice:
- Icicles only at one corner? That downspout or outlet is likely clogged. Water backs up, overflows, refreezes on the way down.
- Ice along the full gutter run? The trough is probably full of compacted debris holding meltwater.
- Water stains on the fascia below the ice? Overflow is already reaching the wood. That is rot insurance you do not want.
- No ice on the south-facing run but ice on the north? Normal. North slopes stay frozen longer. Clogged north runs are the ones that damage fascia first.
If you see two or more of those, schedule a gutter cleaning on the first dry day above 40 degrees. Working gutters in active ice is pointless — you need the debris out before the next freeze cycle.
Why SW Portland sees this more than east side
Arlington Heights, Hillsdale, and the West Hills foothills combine three factors: mature Douglas fir canopy, sloped lots that concentrate runoff, and north-facing roof sections that stay shaded through January.
Homes that skipped fall cleaning are carrying nine months of compacted needles into freeze season. The debris acts like a sponge — it holds water, then that water freezes in place. Our gutter frequency guide recommends twice a year minimum for tree-heavy SW lots. Once if you are on a flat, open lot with minimal cover.
The January window
Between freezes, January and early February are the right time to clear gutters before moss treatment season kicks off in March. You are not fighting spring pollen yet, and the debris from fall is fully settled — not still dropping.
We also flag loose spikes, separated seams, and failing hangers during winter cleanings. Catching a loose run now beats an emergency call during a February atmospheric river.
If you saw ice on your gutters last week and have not had them cleaned since before Thanksgiving, that is worth a call. Written quote by phone: 503-995-1947.
