Why we cleaned gutters before clipping lights on a Bethany two-story
A Bethany homeowner booked lights in September. Smart move — we walked the roofline in daylight, cleared fir needles from the gutters, and mapped a two-story C9 run before anyone was thinking about December.

Most Portland homeowners do not think about Christmas lights in mid-September. The Bethany call was different — a two-story off NW Laidlaw, heavy Douglas fir in the back, original aluminum gutters that had not been touched since spring. They wanted the roofline done right and they wanted a date locked before the October calendar filled.
We scheduled a planning visit, not an install. That distinction matters on a two-story in the PNW.
What we found on the walk-around
From the driveway the fascia looked fine. Up close, the story changed:
- Compacted fir needles along the north gutter run — enough that a standard clip would sit on a mat, not the lip
- One loose hanger on the west elevation where last winter’s ice had pulled the trough slightly out of plane
- A GFCI outlet on the garage wall that was functional but 62 feet from the northeast corner — we flagged an extension path before install day
- Steep rear pitch above the patio — the kind of slope where you plan the ladder placement in September, not discover it in a November drizzle
The homeowner had tried DIY lights two years ago and quit at the back roofline. Fair. Wet composition shingles on a 10/12 pitch are not a weekend project.
Why September prep beats November panic
Our Christmas light booking guide puts residential installs in the first half of November when you book in September. Bethany is a good example of why.
September daylight is long. You can see branch overlap, measure roofline feet accurately, and coordinate a gutter cleaning without rushing. The prep checklist calls for clearing gutters one to three weeks before clips go on — we booked that cleaning for the first week of October and the install for November 6.
On a two-story, clip seating is everything. A clip on top of needle matting works loose in the first windstorm. Then you get the mid-December call: one dark run along the garage wing.
The design decisions we locked in early
Walking the property in September saved a half-day of back-and-forth later:
- C9 warm white along the front and side rooflines — classic look, reads well from the street on a taller elevation
- Mini-LED wraps on the two landscape firs in the front bed, not the monster cedar in back (too much needle drop onto the strands by Thanksgiving)
- Timer at the GFCI with a 5:30 PM on / 11 PM off schedule — neighbor-friendly and easier on bulb life
- No staples, no nails — gutter-safe clips only, which the homeowner cared about after a previous installer left punctures in the fascia
Written quote covered design, commercial LED strands, install, January takedown, and labeled storage. One price, no hourly clock.
What happens between now and install day
Between the September visit and the November install, this Bethany job has three fixed steps: gutter clean in early October, a quick confirmation text if a windstorm drops major branches, and install on the booked weather window.
If you are on a two-story in Bethany, Cedar Mill, or anywhere west of 217 with fir cover, September is when you still get choices. By Halloween you are often taking whatever date is left.
