Book Portland Christmas light installation in September, not October
Everyone waits until the first cold snap in October. By then the good install weeks in November are gone and you are choosing between dates nobody wants.
By Monte Wallenstein Published
Monte’s crew installs Christmas lights year-round — we are not waiting for pumpkins on the porch. But September is when Portland homeowners who know the schedule call. October is when everyone else calls and wonders why November 15 is already taken.
Why September matters
Three things happen when you book in September that do not happen in late October:
You pick the install week. Most Portland homeowners want lights up mid-November — after the leaves drop but before Thanksgiving traffic. That two-week window is finite. September callers get first choice. October callers get what is left.
Design gets locked. Roofline only? Wrap the big maple? Permanent LED channel on the fascia? Those decisions take a walk-through and sometimes a second visit. Starting in September leaves room to order clips, cords, and custom runs before suppliers get slow.
Gutter work happens first. We will not clip lights onto gutters full of fir needles. September booking means you can schedule a gutter cleaning in late October, then lights the following week — clean sequence, one crew relationship.
Our full timing breakdown is in the when to book Christmas light installation guide. Short version: book fall, install late fall, enjoy all December.
What Portland homes need most
Every neighborhood is different, but September walk-throughs repeat a few patterns:
- Irvington and Laurelhurst four-squares — high rooflines, mature trees blocking ladder access from the street. These need planning, not a same-week rush job.
- Beaverton and Hillsboro two-stories — HOA neighborhoods where everyone wants lights up the same weekend. Book early or your block’s “official” look date passes you by.
- Lake Oswego hillside homes — steep driveway, limited staging space. We figure out anchor points and power sources in September so install day is smooth.
- Ranchers in Milwaukie and Clackamas — simpler rooflines but heavy wind exposure on east-facing gutters. We spec clip spacing tighter on those runs.
If you did summer window cleaning or pressure washing, your fascia and soffits are already clean — that is the best surface prep for clip adhesion. Dirty fascia chalks up and clips pop loose by January.
What a September booking includes
When you call in September, we schedule a site visit — usually within a week. We walk the roofline, count linear feet, note tree interference, and talk timer preferences and takedown storage.
You get:
- A written quote that does not change on install day
- A target install window (typically mid-November)
- Option to add takedown and storage in January — same crew, labeled bins, no attic fishing in February
We do not require you to buy lights. We supply commercial-grade LED sets sized to your roofline, or we install yours if they are in good shape and long enough. Mixed-length big-box strings on a two-story eave are where we see the most callback problems — too short, wrong bulb spacing, wrong clip type.
October vs September — real calendar pressure
Last year our November 8–22 block was 80 percent full by October 5. Homeowners who called October 20 were looking at December 1 installs or weekday-only slots.
December installs work fine for parties — but you miss most of the season, and rain windows get narrow. Portland wet Novembers are normal. A crew that already knows your roofline from a September walk-through can move faster when the dry day shows up.
Storage and takedown — think about it now
September is also when to decide where lights go in January. We offer labeled bin storage so you are not untangling last year’s mess on a ladder next November. Mention it on the first call — bin space fills up too.
Call before the first cold snap
The first October night below 45 degrees sends everyone to their phones at once. You do not need to wait for that.
